Overview & About

About Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP

The Canadian standard of specialized management-side advocacy, coast-to-coast employer representation, and foundational labour jurisprudence is embodied by Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP. Founded in 1956 by Norman L. Mathews QC, Allan Dinsdale, Stan Clark, and Beatrice Mathews Lyons—one of the first women in Canadian history to become a law firm partner—the firm was established as Canada's very first legal practice devoted exclusively to advising and defending employers in workplace law. Today, Mathews Dinsdale stands as the only management-side boutique in Canada with a true coast-to-coast national footprint, fielding more than 70 lawyers and professionals across seven offices in Toronto, Sarnia, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, Halifax, and Fredericton. The firm is also the exclusive Canadian member of Ius Laboris, the premier global alliance of leading human resources and workplace law practices spanning over 55 countries.

Mathews Dinsdale consistently commands top-tier rankings in Chambers Canada, The Legal 500 (Elite Boutique), Lexpert, and Canadian Lawyer. The firm has built particular national dominance in Construction Labour Relations, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and Workers' Compensation (WSIB), routinely winning national "Law Firm of the Year" accolades for its regulatory defence bench. Its client roster spans both federally and provincially regulated sectors—advising Fortune 500 multinationals, major domestic airlines, telecom giants, commercial builders, and manufacturers, alongside extensive broader public-sector representations including municipalities, hospital networks, school boards, and police services boards. Its advocates appear regularly before the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB), the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), grievance arbitration panels, and appellate courts.

On the recruitment front, Mathews Dinsdale runs a highly selective, boutique-scale student program in its Toronto headquarters at The Well, taking in cohorts of approximately 2 to 3 (traditionally 3-4) 2L summer students and articling candidates each year. The firm organizes its training around a structured rotation model: articling students spend two-thirds of their term immersed in the Labour Relations Practice Group and one-third in the Employment Law and Litigation Group. Rather than being confined to legal research, students receive direct exposure to collective bargaining tables, grievance arbitrations, witness interviews, human rights mediations, and trial preparations. Operating from the 35th floor of The Well at 8 Spadina Avenue, Mathews Dinsdale pairs high-stakes advocacy with a collaborative culture and dedicated mentorship.
