Overview & About

About Lenczner Slaght LLP

The Canadian standard of trial court excellence, elite appellate advocacy, and courtroom-first training is defined by Lenczner Slaght LLP. Founded in Toronto in 1992 by premier courtroom advocates Alan Lenczner QC and Ronald G. Slaght QC, the firm was created on the singular premise that high-stakes disputes demand dedicated, specialized trial counsel free from the transactional conflicts of large full-service institutions. Today, the firm operates as a powerhouse advocacy boutique of more than 85 litigators based out of a single office at 130 Adelaide Street West. Lenczner Slaght consistently commands the pinnacle Band 1 ranking in Chambers Canada for Dispute Resolution: Litigation (Ontario and Nationwide) and is perpetually recognized as Canadian Dispute Firm of the Year by Benchmark Litigation.

Unlike full-service corporate firms where litigation groups often function as secondary support for transactional clients, Lenczner Slaght is dedicated entirely to dispute resolution. The firm's partners and associates appear regularly before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, the Commercial List, and specialized administrative tribunals. Its counsel are routinely retained to prosecute and defend high-profile commercial disputes, class actions, competition challenges, securities enforcement actions, and complex professional liability mandates—acting for leading institutions such as the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), LawPRO, Big Four accounting firms, and prominent multinational corporations facing bet-the-company trials.

On the recruitment and development front, Lenczner Slaght runs an intensive, boutique-sized student program, welcoming cohorts of approximately 7 to 8 2L summer students alongside roughly 7 to 8 articling candidates each year. Student programming is overseen by Partner and Director of Student Programs Tracy Pratt. The student curriculum emphasizes immediate courtroom immersion: students draft pleadings and motion records, attend trials, discoveries, and cross-examinations, and manage their own Small Claims Court files from inception through trial. Operating from the 26th floor of 130 Adelaide Street West, the firm pairs a demanding trial tempo with a flat, collegiate culture, proprietary data-driven litigation tools, and a consistent 100% articling retention rate.
