Overview & About

About Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP

The Canadian model of dedicated management-side advocacy, deep labour arbitration depth, and comprehensive province-wide employer representation is personified by Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP (FWTA). Founded in Toronto in 1982 by Roy Filion KC, David Wakely, Peter Thorup, and Frank Angeletti, the firm was built around a focused mission: advising and defending management exclusively across all facets of labour relations, employment law, and workplace human rights. Today, FWTA has expanded to more than 50 lawyers operating across four strategic Ontario commercial centres: Toronto (flagship), London, Hamilton, and Kitchener-Waterloo. The firm is also the exclusive Canadian member of L&E Global, an international alliance of premier employer-side workplace law boutiques spanning more than 30 countries.

FWTA consistently commands top-tier rankings in Chambers Canada, The Legal 500, Lexpert, and Best Lawyers in Canada for Employment & Labour (Management - Ontario). The firm's advocates are widely recognized for their deep technical expertise across both provincially and federally regulated workplaces. Its institutional client roster spans manufacturing, public transit authorities, school boards, universities and colleges, municipal governments, public hospital networks, hospitality operators, and financial institutions. FWTA counsel appear regularly before the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB), the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB), the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO), the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT), grievance arbitration boards, and all levels of civil court.

On the recruitment and development front, FWTA runs an intimate, high-impact student program in its Toronto office, welcoming cohorts of approximately 3 to 5 2L summer students alongside 3 to 5 articling candidates each year. Talent acquisition and development are led by Director of Legal Talent and Human Resources Nicole Hunter. The firm's training philosophy prioritizes immediate, hands-on exposure over passive research tasks: students attend collective bargaining negotiations, draft arbitration briefs and pleadings, observe witness examinations, and attend mediation hearings alongside leading labour practitioners. Operating from the 25th floor of the Bay Adelaide Centre at 333 Bay Street, FWTA pairs active tribunal pacing with a down-to-earth, collegial atmosphere.
